All Change at Gorey Writers

Hi everyone,
It has been all-change at Gorey Writers this year.
Due to the large number of writers attending meetings, it was decided to split into two groups - poetry and prose.
Our meeting place has changed too, but in view of the lock-down throughout the country, we have been unable to meet face-to-face and so everything is on hold.
When we are in a position to meet again we will let you know.
In the meantime, stay connected through Whatsapp, or whatever way is good for you.

Taking Flight Launched

Congrats to Gorey Writers on the publication of their second anthology, Taking Flight.
Launched by Jacked Hayden in December 2019 in the Gorey Library, the anthology of poetry and prose was given a rousing reception.

Copies of the book are still available from Boland Press or members of the Gorey Writers Group

Self-Discovery Through Poetry

A 'Self-discovery through Poetry' afternoon with Carol Boland, Poetry Therapy Practitioner, will be held in the Lennon Centre, Annagh Long, Gorey, Co. Wexford on Sunday 25 August '19.

No experience is necessary for this experiential session and participants' poems will not be critiqued.

Afternoon tea is included in the fee of €15. Places are limited so to reserve your place, so as not  to be disappointed, email bolandcarol@hotmail.com or contact Bernie Walsh.

Driftwood by Bernie Walsh

‘Driftwood’ by Bernie Walsh (Boland Press) a collection of poetry, short stories and 100 word stories, was launched in Gorey Library on 8 October 2018. Over 300 people attended the event which was launched by the playwright Billy Roach. The evening included musicians, dancers and friends and family who read from the publication.

Gorey Writers and CrOw Duo

In Between the Lines - An Evening of Prose, Sound and Music

On Thurs, 27 September '18 in Gorey Library, improvisation musicians, CrOw Duo joined Gorey Writers in an evening of music with poetry and stories. Another first for Gorey Writers.

We plan to upload this amazing recording shortly.

Coming Ashore

Coming Ashore by Carol Boland was launched on 14/6/18 at the Old School, Hollyfort, Gorey.

Music and poems rang out in the old school, and the evening was a great success thanks to Hollyfort's Tidy Towns, friends and family.

The book is available from Boland Press at €10 (plus P&P €2.50)

Gorey Writers are back

Gorey Writers are back with a bang after the summer break. About 20 writers turned up to our first session in Gorey Library with plenty of writing and laughter!

Congrats to Liam Ryan on the launch of his book, 'Stories from the Hearth' (Boland Press). A lovely event in Zozimus Bookshop in Gorey.

The Lake - a lesson on objective correlative!

The Lake

The water was warmer than he expected
tingles from head to toe
two by two they danced
and I close my eyes remembering
the reeds swaying in the gentle breath
of the soft zephyr.

The swan and his mate swam across the lake
with sharp shining eyes like flint
the gentle ripples belied a passion
which lay underneath
butterflies danced in my stomach
something moved deep within my soul
deep, deep down forever.

I am the centre of the maelstrom
I am the eye of this discrete hurricane
there is a drama here that isn't easy
do I really ever want to return
to the real world?
The surface sheen holds all my attention
in its diamond gloss -
am I being seduced?


Group poem written by 15 Gorey Writers at our end of season session on 29/6/17. It is around the emotion of love.

Sunday Afternoon

Because you were there

when despair for the world

comes a knocking on the door

she remembers what she is trying

very hard to forget

my dreams have taken the scenic route

so here, lets open those cage doors

undisturbed by roaming, hungry foxes.

Maybe my real mind is telling the truth

I fear for it because it has no defence

calming blues and light pinks

make time to smell the roses

simple things yet special

it’s too cold to lie down

where the wood drake rests.

Thanks to everyone for the support and I'm delighted to report that we have sold nearly 300 copies.
