Calling all Wexford writers

The Scaldy Detail
Following on from the 2007 edition, a new anthology has been a long time coming. But, despite the economic wind blowing, it is now here, and what better time to make it happen.

For those not familiar with the Scaldy Detail, the 2007 edition was a 108-page journal of fantastic "local" writing (http://www.elaunchpad.org/), and was launched then by Wexford playwright Billy Roche.

Guidelines are as follows:

- Submissions are now being accepted at submissions@elaunchpad.org.

- Email submissions ONLY accepted.

- Closing date is Friday, September 30th, 2011. Submissions received after this date will not be considered.

- Ideally, writers should have a connection to County Wexford, OR, their work should encapsulate the County in some way.

- There is no payment for publication due to financial limitations.

- Each writer published in this edition will receive one complimentary copy.

- For fiction, excerpts, memoirs, screenplays, etc. there is a limit of one entry per writer, capped at 2000 words (or not much more!).

- For poetry, lyrics, verse, etc. there is a limit of four entries per writer.

- Enquiries can be directed to Paul O'Reilly at info@elaunchpad.org.

- All writers, regardless of experience, are welcome to submit.

It is envisaged that the journal will be launched in early January, 2012, in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, at a venue to be confirmed.
Good luck!

Wicklow Writers join Gorey Writers in last session of the season

Gorey and Wicklow Writers

The last of our sessions - until September 2011- was a joint evening with Wicklow Writers. It was good to compare notes on how each group ran their sessions, and to make this important link with fellow writers.
Various members shared their work with the group and we finished up with tea and cake.
A big thanks to Wicklow Writers for making the journey, and we hope to see them in Wicklow early next year for a re-match!

Gorey Library Nearly Open

Good News! Gorey Library is nearly open for business. We are trying to contact the powers-that-be to establish if their offer of a meeting room still stands.

In the meantime, here is a poem by Carol Boland

The Secret
Does it burn
Carol Boland

leave lashes on your back
or smack like the crack of kindling
a gunshot on a Sunday afternoon.

Does it pierce your skin
sting like a nettle
or can you smudge it better
with a dock weed.

And when your tongue is tied

to the struts of your mouth
does it smother the flame
can you snuff it out
or does it leave an emptiness
a hole in your chest
from a spear thrown off kilter.

And in the dreaming time
does it sleep behind your eye lid
deflecting the veiled light
like a cornea.
